  • The national units of competency for approved first aid, anaphylaxis management and emergency asthma management qualifications are not specific to individual states even though some have a state abbreviation at the end.
  • Under regulation 136 of the Education and Care Services National Law must be updated at least every three years from the date of completion.

First Aid transitional provisions

The list of approved first aid qualifications, anaphylaxis management training and emergency asthma management training replaces the current state and territory government first aid requirements for educators from 1 January 2012.

The National Regulations include some transitional provisions to give services time meet these requirements. This means that if, on 31 December 2011:

  • A person held a first aid qualification or had completed first aid training that met the requirements of the relevant state or territory legislation but that qualification or training does not appear on the list, the person is taken to hold an approved first aid qualification or to have completed approved anaphylaxis management or approved emergency asthma management training until the 31 December 2012, or the date on which the training or qualification is, or would have been, required to be updated, whichever is earlier (Regulation 245)
  • The relevant state or territory legislation did not require the attendance of an educator trained in anaphylaxis management at an education and care service, the requirement does not apply to that service until 1 January 2013 (Regulation 246)
  • The relevant state or territory legislation did not require the attendance of an educator trained in emergency asthma management at an education and care service, the requirement does not apply to that service until 1 January 2013 (Regulation 247). Please see State and Territory Regulatory Authorities for more detailed information.
